Let’s take a trip back to the Nineties…
Lisa Franks notebooks, dolphin binders, and scented Strawberry Shortcake stickers. Girls were getting their noggins bonked with the colored acrylic balls from their rubber bands, and boys were tripping over those dreadful JNCOs.
And as the Beanie Baby frenzy was sweeping the nation, the phrase “You’ve got mail” was being heard in homes everywhere.
At first, emails were slow… people were still getting used to the technology, so receiving an email was very exciting. I remember people joking about getting up to pee in the middle of the night, and checking their email…. just in case. Before long, people were leaving their email, and their instant messengers open all the time, just so they’d know if someone messaged them. Heck I remember the “uh-oh” sound from ICQ, to this day!
Become the boss of your email, not the other way around!
We were primed to respond instantly. But our emails no longer drift in like a leaf at the beginning of autumn. Now they come in every few minutes, several at a time. Newsletters, sales notices, blog posts, spam, and sometimes (if we’ve been very, very good) we may even hear from a friend.
Times sure have changed!
You’re a busy woman. You don’t have time to be a slave to the computer, or to wait anxiously for an expected email. You’ve got projects to finish, kids to feed, and the library just called to let you know a book is waiting for you behind their desk.
When I first started my business, I felt like I needed to leave my email open 24/7… literally. I mean, what terrible misfortunes would befall me if I missed responding to an email within the first 5 minutes of receiving it? Even Lemony Snicket would be unable to conjure the consequences to such an unfortunate event.
I don’t do that anymore.
There’s something about hearing your email go off every few minutes, that quickly sucks the fun out of… ohhhh everything. Suddenly, what used to be enchanting is almost burdensome.
It’s a productivity killer too!
When you’re stopping every two seconds to go see what just came in, it’s really hard to get anything done. Worse still, when you’re waiting for a particular email to come in, it’s aggravating darting to the inbox just to see another email that isn’t what you’re looking for.

The first thing you should know is that because I have 5 kiddos, I really get the time-crunch that moms have. Let’s face it… women are busy today… kids, husbands, dogs, church, clients… there’s just not a lot of downtime.
